District Central Library
Tourism Plays a Key Economy for the District even though Agriculture and Fishing are the Major ones. Shrines, Places of Hindu Faith, Mosques forms the Spiritual Tourism for the district. Annual Festivals and functions marks glory of the Year. Heritages like Tarangam padi
Fishing, along with Para marine activities like Dry fish ,Prawn farming constitues the second Major economy for the district. The marine ecosystem provides mankind with food, medicines, industrial products and pleasure.
Tamilnadu Government have promulgated public Library Act in 1948, According to the act a committee named Local Library Authority, The Central Library of the District is located near the New bus stand at Nagapattinam. Over 11, 91,103 books were available in the 98 libraries in the district. Over 8,24,733 readers have used the libraries. The district boasts of a membership of 1, 16,841 members to the various libraries. Further, about 6,05,682 lakh books were used in the last year and about 1,023 members have registered with a membership of Rs. 1,000 per person.
Under the 'Our World Library Scheme', over 20,000 students have been enlisted as members. Additionally, for the World Classical Tamil Conference, summer camps were organised and over 7,000 members were enlisted.Funds have been allotted for construction of rural libraries at Vaimedu, Kariappatinam, and Mayiladuthurai
The members Should be presented and any one of the following address proof.
- Ration Card
- Driving License
- Voters Card
- PAN Card
- Student's ID Card
- Employee's ID Card
- One passport size Photo
Educational Institutions like higher Secondary, High School, Elementary School are enrolled as members on payment of Rs.200, Rs.100 and Rs.50 and deposit respectively. Institutions can borrow books from the library and read the books may also exchanged. The object of this scheme is utilization of more books at lesser deposit. Education Institution can also enroll themselves as institutional members of this library.
Philanthropist are solicit to donate Rs.1000/- or part there of will be registered as Library patron and issue the Receipt immediately on payment. The received amount will be deposited in the bank and the accumulated interest will be utilized for the purpose of procuring magazines, journals etc., for the benefit of the readers in the library. Philanthropist will also be honored by issuing a certificate. The amount payable is exempted under section 80G Income Tax Act.
LINKAGE OF LIBRARIES WITH SCHOOLS
Linkage with Schools the Library Staffs will issue and take return of the books bimonthly to the school students for the purpose of inducing them, the reading habits in an early stage which will encourage them to study and gain knowledge for their future
The LLA's are functioning from the library cess received from local bodies. The local body is paying 10% of its total House Tax and Property Tax as library cess.The cess income is used for building rent, electric bills, newspaper, procurement of books and other incidental expenses.To Salary for the staff is receiving from the Government.
OBJECTIVES OF LIBRARIES
- To explore the possibilities of getting land for all libraries as donation.
- To enroll all the literates as a member in the library functioning in their aura.
- To tap resources from the public for the welfare of libraries.
- To open and function two part time libraries per public library.
- To get books, magazines, newspapers and periodicals from the public as donation for libraries.
- To enroll more patrons/donors for the development of libraries.
- To make function every library in its own building.
- To take steps to adopt the libraries by banks and other institutions.
RURAL MOBILE LIBRARY
The main object of the rural mobile library working under the control of the District Central Library is to create awareness about the education and reading habit among the people. Those who are living in remote villages where the library services are not easily acceptable.
