ImageOne of the major economies of the District, Agriculture contributes a higher share of Rice Production in the State. We have raised so many important agricultural crop in our District. Rice, Groundnut, Pulses, Gingelly, Sugarcane and Cotton.  

ImageThis fort was declared as a protected monument by the Department of Archaeology, Government of Tamilnadu in 1977 ADThe Danes constructed fortifications on the coast at Tranquebar. This was the only busy trade centre on the Coromandal coast for the Danes. This fort was a busy trade centre till 1845 AD when the Danes handed over the fort to the English. It was used as a Public Works Department Travellers Bungalow for government servants and colonials till 1977 AD.

VISION

Image "Harnessing the Science of Fisheries for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood". Nagapattinam has a coastline of 188 km with 9,000 fishing vessels involved in fishing. The fishing harbour here is also being modernised even as prawn-rearing is one of the important economic activities. Therefore, this district is conducive for setting up the Fisheries University The Fisheries college and Research Institute at Tuticorin, the research wing of the fisheries department, the Chennai-based Fisheries Institute of Technology and Training, Fisheries Employees Training Centre and the Tamilnadu Maritime University would be affiliated to the Fisheries University to be set up in Nagapattinam

The proposed university would be constructed in over 85 acres in Panankudi and Nagoor villages, Degree and diploma courses relating to prawn-rearing and maintenance of fishing vessels and related accessories, among others, will be offered

Historical Background
  1. The Department of Fisheries was started in the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University [TNAU] during 1973.
  2. The Fisheries College, Thoothukudi was established in 1977 and the first batch of students for B.F.Sc., programme were admitted. The Fisheries College was upgraded as Fisheries College and Research Institute [FCRI] during the year 1989.
  3. The Fisheries College and Research Institute [FCRI], Thoothukudi became a constituent Institute of the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University [TANUVAS] with effect from 20.09.1989.
  4. The Tamil Nadu Fisheries University [TNFU] was established on June 19, 2012 with head quarters at Nagapattinam.

Directorate Extension Education

Introduction

The Directorate of Extension Education of the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University is located at the TNFU premises, Nagapattinam. This Directorate is functioning with the objective of planning , co ordination and execution of all extension programmes of the entire University in close consultation and co operation with the line department and other organizations associated with the development of fisheries. The Directorate of Extension Education brings out extension publications and periodicals, organizes, radio programmes, TV programmes, exhibitions, awareness programmes etc., to disseminate fisheries technologies among the various stakeholders for adoption. The Directorate organizes various types of training programmes including entrepreneurial and skill development programmes for popularizing the new/improved fisheries technologies and for developing skilled man power for undertaking various tasks in the industrial units associated with fish production and processing. The Directorate brings out a farm magazine viz., Meenvala sudar, a quarterly magazine, published in Tamil for the benefit of aqua farmers, fisherfolk and fisheries entrepreneurs. TNFU Newsletter is another periodical published by the Directorate on the various activities of the University.

  1. To plan and co-ordinate the extension activities of the TNFU.
  2. To help the line department and other organizations associated with the development of fisheries to carryout field extension services by producing extension education materials in fisheries for dissemination.
  3. To guide the research activities in fisheries by providing information on field problems for solution.
  4. To development repositories on fisheries technologies, e-contents and course modules for dissemination of knowledge and innovations in fisheries.
  5. To formulate the policies and programme for the extension education activities of the TNFU.
  6. To liaise with fisheries organizations for effective implementation of Government schemes / programmes for developing fisheries.
  7. To undertake continuous research in the field for improving the extension delivery system.

    B.E [Fisheries Engineering] Degree Programme
    B.E[Fisheries Engineering] programme is the first of its kind in India. The Degree is offered as a four year programme following semester system from the year 2015-16 with an initial intake of 20 students.
